Mr. Baer is Back With More

videoStraight from the studio to LPS Voices, here is Mr. Baer with his brand new track.

Mr. Baer Kicking Knowledge

Check out Mr. Baer at his old school, Alameda High, telling it like it is. He hasn't changed much, has he, LPS Richmond?

This School Year

Many students feel that this school year is worse than the previous; that the teachers and administration are becoming too strict. Personally, I think that the admin. is making some necessary adjustments to the school. If you compare this year to the last, you'll see that the campus is much cleaner, there are more activities (during lunch and after school), and our transcripts are finally a priority. Not just that, but now with the tutor tickets and the SAT prep course, students are getting more help than before. Truthfully, I don't think that going to tutoring should be mandatory, but it does seem to be working really well. That's about it...
Lastly, I just want to advertise a bit...

LPS is establishing it's very own Model United Nations Club. We currently have about 5 members who will continue this organization into next year, and we want to increase the enrollment. This club will look great on your college applications, and the conferences are loads of fun and you get to learn a lot about the world judicial system. If you are interested in joining this club, please see either Cory Tam, Roel Cabrera, Chris Marks, Jose Ortega, or the Junior history teacher Ms. Hollinger.

Softball & Baseball Bloggers

Are you on the softball or baseball team? If so, we're looking for writers to give us an inside look at the team. How was today's practice? What's the season looking like? Any exciting stories to tell? Again, if you want to be a writer, just email Mr. Madway at jmadway@leadps.org.

Calling All Future Scientists!

Here is a really inspiring story about a New York City middle school teacher who is going to spend 8 weeks in Antarctica this fall working with a team of scientists. Her students are very excited for her and you will be, too! Check out the article.

Do You Want to Write for LPS Voices?

Do you have things to say that you think should be heard? If so, become a writer for Voices. Here's how: send an email to me, Mr. Madway, at jmadway@leadps.org, telling me why you want to write for the blog. I'll write you back and tell you how to get started. It's as easy as that. I look forward to hearing from you!

A Place for Our Voices to be Heard

So here's what this is all about:

Voices of LPS Richmond is going to be an open forum for members of our community to read about and comment on things that affect us at LPS. Anyone who wants to write for Voices - students or adults - will be able to do so (see the above post for how to become a writer!) So maybe an 11th grade student writer wants to let the rest of the school know about the college tour, or maybe an English teacher wants to take an interesting question from class and pose it to the rest of the school, or maybe I want to understand from students why the boys bathroom was trashed on Friday - this will be the place to read, write and comment.

My hope is that this blog will give us a chance to learn more about our community - what we care about, what we believe in, what we like, what we don't like, what we stand for, and what we will not stand for. In short, Voices of LPS Richmond will be whatever we decide to make it.

So, what do you think? Does it sound like a good idea? Post your comments below.

Administration

Ms. Shawn Benjamin
Principal

Ms. Benjamin joined the LPS family because she believes in it's mission of sending all students on to college to shape the course of their future. In addition, she believes everyone has the potential to achieve given the right opportunites. Therefore, she wants to help create the best school possible for the LPS Richmond students. Ms. Benjamin has worked with LPS for 5 years, 3 years as Principal of LPS Richmond. She loves her job and feels very fortunate to be able to work with such talented people, both students and faculty. Ms. Benjamin grew up in the SF Bay Area. She went to U.C. Berkeley as an undergraduate student, and has to Master's Degrees, one from University of Pennsylvania and one from Harvard Graduate School of Education. Prior to LPS, Ms. Benjamin worked for 2 different schools that focused on teaching leadership to its students. Ms. Benjamin is excited to see our Richmond graduates become the next great leaders of our schools, communities, in their careers, and maybe of our country!

Ms. Vanessa Barrios
College Counselor

Ms. Barrios was born and raised in Los Angeles. Taking a big leap from L.A. to the Bay, she attended U.C. Berkeley and majored in Sociology. She found her passion in education and politics while living in Washington D.C. and working for several Upward Bound Programs. Ms. Barrios earned two Master’s Degrees in Education and Counseling from Harvard Graduate School of Education and the University of Southern California. This is Ms. Barrios first year at LPS and is excited that all the students are motivated to go to college. The students inspire Ms. Barrios and she enjoys helping them make higher education an option.

Ms. Julie Christensen
Literacy Coach

A Bay Area native, Ms. Christensen fell in love with teaching while she was in college at U.C. Davis. She has been working as an educator since the day after she graduated, teaching 7th and 8th graders in Sacramento and San Jose; university students in Campeche (Mexico), and 9th - 12th grade students in the South Bay Area. In June 2007 Ms. Christensen came to Leadership Public Schools as a Literacy Coach, and she is thrilled to be working with the amazing teachers and students at both LPS Richmond and LPS Oakland.

Mr. Leroy Gaines
Academic Dean

Mr. Gaines was born in Boston, MA and raised in Holyoke, MA (the birthplace of volleyball and, debatably, basketball). He earned an AB in Africana Studies from Bowdoin College and an Ed. M in Educational Leadership from Teachers College, Columbia University. Prior to coming to LPS Richmond, Mr. Gaines taught at an elementary school in San Jose, served as an adjunct education professor at a local college, and led various school reform efforts in San Francisco and Oakland as an education consultant. He is an avid sports fan who enjoys spending time with his family, friends and dog, Brady. Mr. Gaines is overjoyed to be a member of the LPS Richmond family and is looking forward to spending long hours to make sure all our students successfully graduate from college.

Mr. Andy Hatcher
Student Life Coordinator and Athletic Director

Mr. Hatcher grew up in Tennessee, went to high school in Wisconsin, graduated from college out East, and got started teaching in Los Angeles through the Teach for American program. After all of his travels, he's very happy to be working in the Bay Area at LPS Richmond. This is his 9th year teaching and his 5th year at our school. Over the years, Mr. Hatcher has seen his job description here change a little. He started as a full-time English teacher and just last year went to being a part-time teacher and part-time After School Program coordinator. He remains dedicated to preparing our 12th graders for college while also offering all LPS students the opportunity to play sports and take extra-curricular classes like music and dance. In his spare time, Mr. Hatcher continues to play the guitar and work on his curve ball.

Ms. Julia Hollinger
Curriculum Coach

Ms. Hollinger grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan and moved to California after living on the east coast for ten years. She studied history at Wesleyan University in Connecticut and worked as a youth outreach counselor in Washington DC before moving to Boston, MA and getting her Masters of Arts in teaching. She has taught for ten years at five different schools. In addition to her time in the classroom, Ms. Hollinger wrote and produced a feature length film and has always enjoyed spending time playing music, dancing, and with other aspects of the creative arts. Ms. Hollinger spends the rest of her spare time enjoying the outdoors, cooking and eating great food, and chasing around her 3 year old son, Aidan. She and her wife are expecting two more (twins) sometime in March. She absolutely loves the students and staff at LPS.

Mr. Jesse Madway
Dean of Students

Jesse Madway grew up in Oakland, CA and graduated from Berkeley High School in 1988. He then headed for UC Santa Cruz where he spent the next 4 years as an American Studies major. After 3 years as a teacher's aide at Willard Middle school in Berkeley, he went to Mills College in Oakland and earned his teaching credential. The next 9 years would be spent as an English teacher at JHS 258 in Brooklyn, NY, and Thurgood Marshall High School in San Francisco. In 2005, Mr. Madway began teaching English at LPS Richmond and in 2007, he became the Dean of Students. His favorite thing about his job is getting an opportunity to work with the incredible LPS Richmond student body and staff.

Ms. Ximena Montes
School Manager

Ms. Montes is half Mexican, half Argentinean, was born in Japan and grew up in Berkeley. She attended UC Berkeley and majored in Latin American Studies. She has worked managing youth programs in San Francisco's Mission District, as a translator for INS asylum hearings and in property management, but her job at Leadership is by far her favorite. Ms. Montes has worked here for over two years and the energy and enthusiasm put forth by LPS students and staff make it a rewarding, fun and positive work environment.

Ms. Shree Ram
Intervention Counselor

Ms. Ram was born in San Francisco and grew up in a few different towns in Marin County across the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. She went to Tamalpais High School--a really big school named after the mountain you can see from Leadership when you are looking West. Ms. Ram decided she wanted to go to a small college on the East Coast because she wanted to experience snowy winters and fall fire flies. Ms. Ram attended Swarthmore College outside of Philadelphia where she stayed up late writing essays and reading hundreds of pages for homework AND made some of the closest friends she still has. After living in Philadelphia, Boston, and Chicago, Ms. Ram returned to the Bay Area and now lives in Oakland. The 2009-2010 school year is Ms. Ram's second at LPS-Richmond. Students at LPS keep it real, are willing to grow, work with their challenges, and want to be the most they can be. This is why she wouldn't want to work anywhere else.

Mr. Korey Whitfield
After-School Program Coordinator

Biography coming soon!

Ms. Sara Wolfe
Enrollment and Outreach Coordinator

Ms. Wolfe was born in Mexico City and lived there for a total of 8 years. She also lived in the Washington DC area before moving to San Francisco a couple years ago. She attended the University of Maryland, studied abroad in Mexico at La Universidad de las Americas-Puebla and earned her Master's Degree in Education from Johns Hopkins University. She has spent the last 5 years as a High School Spanish Teacher and Student Life Coordinator. She's thrilled to be a part of the LPS team - both because of her great admiration for the teachers and because of the wonderful students she gets to work with every day. Ms. Wolfe thinks this is the most exciting time to be in education and hopes to be a part of this team (and the WolfePack!) for a long time to come.

Teachers

Mr. Victor Aguilera
History Teacher

Mr. Aguilera was born and raised in Oakland, CA. He attended UCLA and got his Bachelor's Degree in Chicana/Chicano Studies and Political Science. He continued on to graduate school at UCLA to attain his Master's Degree in Education and teaching credential. Before coming to LPS Richmond, Mr. Aguilera taught English Language Development, Spanish, and History in South Los Angeles. One of the main reasons Mr. Aguilera teaches here at LPS Richmond is his ability to identify with the students of Richmond. As a Bay Area product, he understands their struggles, but also understands that each student holds a tremendous amount of potential. It is his hope to help them unlock that potential; not only for their personal success, but for the success and benefit of their entire community.

Mr. Peter Baer
English Teacher

Mr. Baer was born and raised in Denver, Colorado; he came to the Bay Area in 1997 to earn his B.A. in Philosophy from UC-Berkeley, followed by his M.A. in Education from Stanford. He is in his eighth year teaching English, and his third year at LPS-Richmond. He loves his job because he loves being surrounded by ideas, by his fellow teachers, and most of all, by his amazing students. When not teaching, he spends his time reading, writing, emceeing, and hanging out with his wonderful wife and friends.

Mr. Charles Chretien
Science Teacher

Mr. Chretien was born and raised in Manchester, New Hampshire and then went to college at WPI, a small science and engineering school in Worcester Massachusetts. After graduating with a BS in physics, Mr. Chretien went to the University of Massachusetts to get his Masters in Education. Shortly after finishing his masters, Mr Chretien got married and came to California with his wife so she could pursue her PhD in biology at UC Berkeley. Teaching physics at LPS was Mr. Chretien's first teaching job when moving to the Bay Area. Mr. Chretien came to LPS because he wanted to teach physics to all students rather than a select group of students like at most other schools.

Ms. Felicia Cinquegrana
Art Teacher

Ms. Cinquegrana grew up in Rhode Island. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and her Masters Degree in Art Education from Rhode Island School of Design. In her spare time she has a studio at the Firehouse Collective where she makes sculpture in clay and metals. This is her second year teaching at LPS. She says," LPS is a great school, a great environment for the students, and has great teachers. I am very happy here."

Mr. Joshua Cristantiello

Ms. Sara Frymoyer
English Teacher

Ms. Fry was born and raised in Pennsylvania. She attended Eastern University where she earned her BA in Sociology. During college, Ms. Fry became impassioned by injustice and inequality, both local and global. She successfully led a student campaign that inspired her university to serve Fair Trade coffee (ensuring that co
ffee farmers in developing countries receive a fair wage!). Ms. Fry first came to CA in 2004 and spent a year living and working in West Oakland where she figured out that she would work with teenagers for the rest of her life. Before LPS, Ms. Fry taught just down the street at Kennedy. Though she loved her years at "the K", she adores working at LPS because it is a hope-filled place with students who inspire her every single day. Other than teaching, Ms. Fry enjoys trying new things, talking, drinking coffee, reading, creativity, shopping, rock climbing, travel, and exploring restaurants in the Bay Area.

Mr. Taylor Garland
Math Teacher and Resource Specialist

Mr. Garland comes originally from Boston, Massachusetts. He came to the Bay Area because it just seemed like the right place for him to be, and the same thing is true of the moment he found LPS Richmond. Being randomly transferred from the Hayward school to the Richmond school in 2007 was a change for which he couldn't be more grateful. Since graduating from Washington University in St. Louis in 2004, Mr. Garland has realized that the most fun place you can work is with a passionate, challenged group of teenagers, helping them to change the future.

Ms. Elizabeth Gore
English Teacher

Ms. Gore grew up in Chicago, Illinois. In college, she studied film-making, and dreams about being able to teach LPS students how to make movies in her English class. She has lived in Massachusetts, Oregon, Nicaragua, New York, and Illinois. She moved to Oakland this year to teach at LPS because she realized what a special place LPS Richmond is during a visit last year. Outside of school she likes to write plays, do yoga, cook, and dance.

Ms. Arminda King
Math Teacher

Ms. King was born and raised in the beautiful city of New Orleans, Louisiana with her parents, older brother, and loyal dog Joey. She attended Tulane University in New Orleans and then taught high school Science for two years in New Orleans Public Schools. It was during this time that she received the best birthday present ever: a small cat named Hunter. Although she loves New Orleans, Ms. King eventually felt that it was time to try new things, so she moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts to earn her master's degree in Learning and Teaching at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. It was there that she met her husband, Jonathan, and fell in love with major league baseball. She spent a few more years teaching and supporting teachers before moving to San Francisco and teaching at LPS-Richmond. She is thrilled to work with the smartest, funniest, coolest and most talented students and teachers in the world here at LPS-Richmond, and is grateful that they brought her the newest addition to her family: a kitten named Lenny.

Mr. Adam Kondonijakos
History Teacher

Mr. Kondonijakos was born in Queens, New York and raised in Philadelphia, PA. After high school Mr. K attended the University of Arizona where he majored in Media Arts and Art History. After graduating he moved to Oakland where he lived for a couple years before moving to San Diego to acquire his M.A. in Education. While in San Diego, he taught and substituted for 2 years. Mr. K moved back to the Bay Area in 2005 and has been teaching at LPS ever since. Mr. K has been at LPS Richmond for 5 years and enjoys working here because of the great group of students and staff he sees everyday. In his spare time, Mr. K enjoys reading, watching Jeopardy, playing Chess, Fantasy Football, his PS3, and playing with his son Bodhi.

Ms. Van Lac
English Teacher

Ms. Lac is a product of "The Town" better known as Oakland, California. Her experiences in the Oakland Public Schools inspired her to become a teacher and be an agent of change in communities similar to Oakland. After earning her B.A. at the University of California Berkeley in English Literature, she decided to cross the waters into enemy territory, also known as Stanford, to earn her Masters in Education and teaching credential. Ms. Lac has been an English teacher at LPS-Richmond for the past six years. She finds her job extremely rewarding and fulfilling.

Ms. Dana Loebman
Math Teacher

Ms. Loebman grew up in Los Angeles. After attending Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, she moved to rural Colorado to teach high school students the wonders of mathematics. She taught at two different boarding schools, both of which had active outdoor programs where the students learned to recite the quadratic formula while backpacking through mountains and deserts. Ms. Loebman is very glad to be back in the fine state of California and teaching at LPS. When she is not graphing lines, Ms. Loebman enjoys riding her bicycle in the hills of Oakland.

Ms. Julia McKinnon
Spanish and English Teacher

Ms. McKinnon was born
in the Bay Area. She moved to Montana when she was two and grew up there. In high school she participated in school exchange programs in Japan, Ecuador and Italy. Then she went to Middlebury College in Vermont because of the school's excellent language program. At Middlebury she studied Italian and Spanish and majored in History. She studied abroad in Argentina during her junior year of college and absolutely loved being immersed in Spanish with her host family, learning Argentine lingo, the tango, and the history of the desaparecidos. It was during her time in Argentina that Ms McKinnon realized she loved Spanish. She came to California in 2007 to teach and taught for two years at Kennedy High School in Richmond, before moving down the street to teach at Leadership.
Apart from languages, Ms. McKinnon also loves cooking, playing the cello, running, reading, hiking in mountains and the commu
nity at LPS.

Mr. Vinicio Merlino
Science Teacher

Mr. Merlino was born in El Salvador and grew up in Ohio. He obtained a B.A. in Biology and a teaching credential fro
m Witttenberg University. Before coming to LPS, Mr. Merlino worked at the Headlands Institute where he led hikes for school groups. The main reason Mr. Merlino decided to work at LPS is because of the students and teachers that have led us to where we are today. Mr. Merlino believes every student has the potential to go to college and finish college. Mr. Merlino sees the desire to succeed in all students. "Sail by sea, find who you were meant to be, lighthouse Captain storm, arms stretched out, free falling dive, wind driven hair in your eyes." Dream big!!!

Ms. Maya Miller-Vedam

Mr. John Mullen
Science Teacher

John Mullen was born in Scotland in 1965. He studied at Edinburgh University. After working as a motor-cycle courier, gas station attendant and barman, he trained as a teacher in 1987. He worked in a public school in Botswana, Southern Africa for two years then returned to Scotland where he taught in various schools around Edinburgh. He moved to California in 2007. In 2008 his daughter Eva was born.

Mr. Chris Rozeville
Math Teacher

Mr. Rozeville grew up all around California and one year in Texas. He went for three years to a local community college (for financial reasons) and then went 2 more years to the University of Riverside California where he majored in Pure Mathematics. Mr. Rozeville loves teaching at LPS Richmond because of the incredible staff and students that make up the school!

Ms. Kathryn Schirtzer
Math Teacher and Resource Specialist

Ms. Schirtzer grew up in Southern California, then moved to the Midwest where she attended the University of Michigan and earned a BA in English Literature. After college, she moved back to Los Angeles to receive a Master's Degree in Education for Students with Special Needs while teaching in the Los Angeles Unified School District for two years. Ms. Schirtzer believes that all students CAN and WANT to learn. She is so excited to be a part of the LPS staff where teachers and students work together to assist students in achieving their goals.

Mrs. Sophia Thomas
Math Teacher

Mrs. Thomas grew up in Jamaica, where she spent most of her life. She obtained her high school and college education in Jamaica and only joined the LPS Staff in August 2007. This decision came about as Mrs. Thomas wanted the opportunity to teach in a country besides where she is from as well wanted the experience of working in a small school. She was intrigued by the mission statement of the LPS schools - urban kids creating real opportunities for college in situations where education is not only a way out but is also empowering. The staff and students are two of the main reasons why Mrs. Thomas has decided to remain at LPS Richmond. So far the experience has been rich and Mrs. Thomas eagerly anticipates her remaining years at LPS Richmond. Mrs Thomas feels that she has something special to offer and constantly reflects on her past as a student in order to prepare her present students for the challenges they may face in the math classroom.
